Non-Smoking Policy
Introduction
DJ's as always been a non-smoking school, promoting and encouraging a healthy life style to all staff, pupils, parents, carers and visitors.
By law as from the summer of 2007 all workplaces must become a smoke fee environment.
This non-smoking policy has been devised in collaboration with Dudley Smoking Cessation Officer.

- The policy identifies how DJ's Dance School creates a smoke free environment for the benefit of pupils, staff, visitors and parents/carers.
- The Health & Safety at Work Act (1974) requires that the school take reasonable measures to protect the health and safety of staff, pupils and visitors.
- Second hand smoke can cause misery and harm. Including illnesses like bronchitis, pneumonia asthma and other respiratory problems.
- Children and young people are more likely to be susceptible to second hand smoking.
Rationale
- DJ's Dance School recognises and fully accepts those responsibilities placed upon it by health and safety legislation to provide a safe working and learning environment.
- The purpose of the policy is to protect and improve health, safety and well being of all staff, pupils, parents, carers and visitors
- DJ's Dance School will place particular emphasis on raising awareness amongst pupils on the impact of smoking and second hand smoke
- DJ's Dance School recognises that smoking is an addiction and aims to provide supportive environment. Pupils, staff, parents, carers and visitors will be able to access stop smoking support/advise through the school’s Health Advisor and the Dudley Stop Smoking Service
Pupils who are found smoking on school grounds
Any pupils found smoking whilst at dance will be reported to their parent/carers for them to take them home and deal with the situation accordingly
The pupil shall be referred to seek further advise/support from the Health Advisor
Implementation and Enforcement of the Policy
With immediate effect complete prohibition on smoking in all parts of the dance premises will be applied.
Staff will be responsible for the promotion and maintenance of a smoke free environment.
A copy of this is made available to all
Policy Review
Staff will meet and ensure that the policy is reviewed and up dated every 12 months.
Documentation to support the Policy
- 'Choosing Health, Making Healthy Choices Easier' Government White Paper (2004) identifies key themes, the justification of banning smoking in public places and workplaces is to protect the welfare of others, especially children and young people (Department of Health 2004)
- 'Every Child Matters' also recognises that there is a need to promote healthy lifestyles in children and young people, covering key areas such as healthy eating, active lifestyles, preventing or reducing the use of tobacco, alcohol and volatile substances (Department of Health; Every Child Matters, 2003)
